SONGSCAPES, my recent series, explores the relationship between images and words; specifically how great song lyrics not only involve the deepest of human emotions but also humor and whimsy. My visual renditions of songs both suggest and encompass human experiences that strike a resounding chord in the viewer. Music and painting have always held a strong interconnection for me. When I paint, I always have music playing and often find myself singing along with the vocalist. My love of the humorous and romantic lyrics has inspired me to examine the relationship between vision and verse. Via this series in progress, I am exploring the relationship between the two art forms as well as delving into the infinite realm of emotions celebrated by painting and music. Through texture and paint I intend to examine form and content in the visual metaphors that exist in the lyrics. The song, Fever, is based on the classic Peggy Lee song. In a word, it sizzles! You might call it a visual explanation that is part humorous, part whimsy, but always passionate. My work describes how through love, loss, and laughter, we are able to reinvent ourselves and survive. Perhaps we all can sing another song, and paint another picture.
