Marland, John W.

I use my art to create images of places, events and people that expose a part of the human experience. Some small, but universal truth, we can share. In drawings the minimal amount of line and image to evoke that response is usually the best. It's not illustrative. I don't want to record, that's the job of photography. I'm trying to make all my works such that the viewer feels as though they have just happened across the scene, a glimpse of some happening that evokes a feeling of shared experience. I use color in my paintings to evoke that same commonality of experience. Some of the detail of the image may be lost in order to capture the feeling of familiarity. I'm trying to evoke the flash of connection that you get, when in conversation with a friend, you find you have a common, shared, response to a bit of life.
