He received a degree in painting and drawing from Northeastern Illinois University in 1985 and was greatly influenced by painting instructor Leo Segedin. Before settling in with his current representational narrative and still life painting, Marszalek experimented with both abstraction and pastels. He continues to reside and work in Chicago.
